Tips For Writing Marriage Vows

By Elizabeth Lorel

Couples that are getting married want their wedding to be one of the most special and memorable days of their life together. A great way to add their own personal touch to the ceremony is by contributing some words of their own. There is some advice people should follow if they want to write their own marriage vows.

The first tip is to begin writing early and to not procrastinate over getting started. If people give themselves plenty of time they can write, edit and rewrite until they get their vows just the way they want them. The person does not want to wait until the last minute, otherwise they might not get their words just right and could forget things that they want to say.

Some wedding venues prefer couples to go the traditional route and follow a script that is already written. This is why it is always a good idea to speak with the person conducting the wedding beforehand. Most places will have no problem with couples writing their own vows, but it is always best to be sure.

People that need some inspiration when they are getting started should take a look at things other people have written. They may find a joke or theme that they can turn into their own, or maybe it will just give them some motivation to get started. People should avoid copying the vows of another person but getting inspiration is certainly acceptable.

The writer should also try to establish a tone from the get go, regardless of what the tone is. If the person wants to be funny they might begin with a joke, while those taking things more seriously may want to quote from scripture. People that are shooting for romance might start their vows with a line or two from a poem.

People should always remember the audience that they are going to be speaking to. Since it will likely contain a wide mixture of family members, friends and other loved ones it is best to keep things appropriate. Even though it is their wedding, the couple should avoid offending their guests when reading their wedding vows.

Couples can make their wedding ceremony completely unique by writing their own marriage vows. They should take their time and think carefully about what they want to say to make a memory that lasts a lifetime. A fun and special wedding can be the beginning of a long married life together.
