Four Tips To Get Things Done

Having worked at corporate senior management level and now running my own business, I consistently feel the pressure to get things done faster, better and more easily. The reality is, it doesn't come easily. I'm still working on it but today I am going to share a few tips that have helped me to work better.

1. Sleep well and exercise. Easily said than done. When we are busy, we feel tired, we tend to eat more take away food and skip exercising. But it's going to be a vicious circle, if you don't look after your body, it won't look after you. Prioritize self care. Ever heard the saying? A healthy mind, healthy body leads to a healthy bank balance. "We need to eat well and exercise regularly to keep our energy level up. Sleep more. Don't feel guilty about it. It is a pleasure not a luxury or evil.
2. Make a list. It sounds cliché but don't rely on your memory as your system. Write down the things you need to do, your schedule. At the start of each day, highlight 2 or 3 most important things you have to do. Do them first. It you get noting else accomplished aside these important tasks. You've still had a pretty productive day.
3. Stay focused. We human beings are sometimes like monkeys. Admit it. We get distracted very easily. Why do you think you check your email so much? If we want to be more productive and get your focus back, there are no secret tricks here... do one thing at a time. Allocate a solid time slot to do that only. Stop multitasking - it's just another form of distraction.
4. Stop being a perfectionist. I used to be very hard on myself. I wanted to get everything done 100% perfectly all the time until one day I read from somewhere: 85% is still an A. Slowly I'm learning to take it easy. Prepare to do your worst. Give yourself permission to suck. Relive the pressure of needing to achieve perfection in every task on the first run. Once we learn to let go of perfectionism, worries, insecurities and exaggerated expectations. We will be free to sit down and be more productive.
Life is a forever learning progress. Hopefully with a few strategies, we can all have more energy, be more relaxed, and get a lot more accomplished with less effort.
